The definition of “essential” is a thing that is absolutely necessary. While the list I’ve curated of Essentials is helpful to build a base for your closet, they don’t exactly hit the fullness of that word. But what is absolutely necessary in life is hope. Out of that hope, action. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I want to encourage you all to read his letter from the Birmingham jail. It’s a long letter that always makes me cry, but it’s well worth the time it’ll take to read.

He once said "Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in." With that, start with your neighbor. Then go on to the next. Find your stranger we’ve talked about. Someone to be kind to. Action can begin there, and travel in varying degrees to creating a movement. Just don’t let another day go by without active hope full of love for humanity.

The Essential
Yesterday marked the thirteenth year without my cousin, Shawnie. We were born about a month apart, and that closeness in age meant we were often fighting over silly little things. Though the unwritten rule was if someone else wanted to come after us, we always had each others backs. One time in particular, I remember a new kid at school teasing my cousin for the way his clothes fit. The kid didn’t realize his clothes fit that way because Shawnie had cancer and would often experience major weight loss or bloating. Instead of walking away, I chose an abrupt way to quiet the kid then grabbed Shawnie to go. We’d later laugh at this and the look of shock across everyone’s face after that initial smack.

I’m sharing this as a reminder that we go through life seeing people different from us and rarely know the reason why. Sometimes that difference is physical and able to be seen, but often times it isn’t visible at all. Be gentle to those around you, and remember that everyone has a story. This holiday season is so wonderful and full of joy, but if you’re struggling this year know I’m thinking of you and sending a hug.

With Shawnie in mind, I chose architectural landmarks in Atlanta because he always wanted to be an architect. Don’t forget to look up from time to time (literally and metaphorically) and enjoy the life around you. You will find that there are some pretty cool things to see when you do!

While grabbing lunch with a friend recently, I was given some advice that has been living rent free in my mind ever since. Now, it can live with you also. We were talking about getting into relationships, but it’s just as applicable to friendships. Essentially she said to “be what you seek”. If you are searching for kindness, show it to others. If you want loyalty, get a good understanding of what that means and do likewise.

Tonight’s looks come from a request that involves a relationship heading to Ojai Valley, so I suppose that fits though I’m definitely leaning on my artistic license. I mostly just wanted to share that thought. What is something you seek that you personally want to work on? This might be something that you want to set for a new year’s resolution. Or not. Either way, those four words are now yours to sit on as well.

As mentioned in stories, I haven't felt well for a few days now. This meant I was in bed a lot, and fell completely out of my routine. Today was my first day feeling like myself, and all I wanted to do was get back into that routine.

Tonight's Princess Diaries Gift Guide is fitting, as it includes my AM/PM skincare routine, as well as hair and makeup for the days I need a little "Mia" transformation. I know the boards have a lot more verbiage than usual, but I'm writing up a complete page with this information for anyone needing help at the beauty counter. I'll share the page in stories when it is complete!

Everything in my routine may not work for you, but these are honest reviews and recommendations of things that have worked well for me. If you ever have a question about a product- please don't be shy. Message me! I'm always happy to help where I can.

What is your one beauty item that you'd suggest to anyone? For me, it's first sunscreen. Then the Biologique Recherche P50. I haven't found anything that I love more or that works better.

Beauty
We grew up watching a lot of black and white films at my house, and many of the scenes from those movies still play over in my mind. Outside of books, these films were a portal to other countries and cultures and the idyllic view of each created a narrative in my mind of a world I wanted to explore. There were two women in particular that I loved to watch on screen and they both had the surrname of Hepburn. Tonight’s iconic style focus is on Audrey Hepburn, but a full break down of Katharine Hepburn’s outfits will certainly be coming!

Both on screen and off, Audrey Hepburn’s style is not only still noteworthy but applicable to our modern times. She was at the beginning of a major shift in fashion, and the choices she made created classic styles that we all wear today. If you look closely, you’ll notice that a few of the pieces from this collection can also be found on other style icons I have covered. It’s a testament that shows classic pieces truly never go out of style. There will be small tweaks and trends, but the essentials of a classic won’t change. Who is your style icon you’d like to see covered next?

There is a quote that says something like “friends are the family we choose”, and for me that rings true. I’d imagine many of you instantly thought of your friend group and the impact they’ve had on your life when you read that quote. While I’ve been blessed with a loving and supportive family, my friends have very much become my chosen family as well.

Last year when my boyfriend broke up with me, I had a knock on the door within 15 minutes of telling my best friend. She came to sit and cry with me but then to encourage me to keep moving on. She sat with me and cried when my grandmother passed away but reminded me of the good memories I had. Those are low points in life, but friends that are family are there for both highs and lows. I’m bringing her up tonight, because a request takes us to Colombia- my best friend’s home country.

She moved here from Colombia when she was young, but her family brought a sense of the culture, people and food with them. Our whole class was amazed by the idea of a quinceañera and the fact that even her grandparents got out on the dance floor with us. And danced. All. Night. Long. It was always a treat to have Olga (her mom) cook breakfast, or any meal for that matter. It still is. She’s introduced me to bandeja paisa, sudado, sancocho and taught me to make them, plus more. I’m wanting to visit Colombia with her this year, and see the country through her eyes. I’ll definitely have more to share with you all after that, but for now I hope these tips and suggestions for Bogotá are helpful to the traveler heading there!

Last night I shared a post about it never being too late to start and it got me thinking about a dear family friend who followed her dream to Florence. She had been fighting cancer for many years and it had left her nearly blind. So when we got a message saying “Lili is heading to Florence to live as an artist!” it came as a happy surprise but one we knew was so very like her. She didn’t let a lack of sight cloud her vision, and she lived in Florence creating artwork. Friends and family took turns visiting her to experience and see the city through her eyes.

This concept of time and when we are meant to do something can box us in and leave us wishing we could have done (fill in the blank). It made me happy to see many of you sharing what you would like to do, learn, see and cook in 2023 and I hope to encourage you all throughout the year to get out there and do it. This year I’d like to learn to drive stick shift and take a BTS tour of an art museum. My long shot wish is to follow in Lili’s footsteps and spend a few weeks sketching and watercoloring my way through Florence. Our dreams come in all sizes, and it’s never too late to start. What will you be starting this year and how can I encourage you?

Since Friday I’ve been in training with Laura, a master of Pilates, working on mat exercises, form and teaching. For me, the most difficult aspect of this isn’t learning how to properly position or even knowing what movements would best help particular needs. Instead it involves being unsure of how to effectively communicate with someone who is in the class. Laura spoke a lot on technique, but the best advice she gave me was to find my own voice.

If you’re like me, that can be challenging and take time. I started sharing travel and style here on Instagram because it was something I enjoyed, but in the beginning it was lacking. It wasn’t until late last year that I realized the best way to communicate is the only way I can- in my own voice. It’s the same advice Laura gave me about Pilates, and it’s the same advice I’m passing on to you. If you find yourself struggling and wondering what to do- find your voice. The people who are meant to be in your life will be attracted to that, and the ones who are not, will be elsewhere. That’s okay.

You might be thinking how I will tie this story to tonight’s boards, and in truth I don’t have a clue. I mostly have just had that on my mind and felt it needed to be shared. In the same way I suppose I felt some Spring boards were needed. Temperatures are swinging lately, and it’s required far more layering of lighter pieces. I know it’ll only continue that way, so I hope these boards are helpful to you also!

In 2014, I was creating handmade jewelry and using Instagram to get the word out about it. Somehow I was introduced to Stephenie Watts, and by extension her husband Chase. They didn’t have kids and were at the beginning of a major life transformation. Nearly ten years later, I still call them friends and have had the opportunity to watch them grow and become the most incredible parents, dreamers and business partners. If you look at any of the homes they have designed, you’ll immediately see that no detail is left unnoticed and they put so much heart into every project. They’ve been working to create spectacular boutique stays that go from Cape Cod to Mérida.

It’ll come as no surprise that I immediately thought of them and the work they are doing @casapanteramerida when a request was sent in for the Yucatan Peninsula. They’ve lovingly restored this home with intentional sophistication to ensure that anyone who stays there will feel a part of this beautiful city. Not only that, but I know you’ll feel the love that they’ve poured into the home as soon as you see it. They treat the homes the way they treat people: with respect, thoughtfulness and love. That is something I think we can all agree needs to be highlighted and praised. The world needs more joyful friends like the Watts.

Did anyone else grow up looking forward to the monthly delivery of a little yellow magazine that transported you to distant places around the world? We grew up in a small town, but the world was made accessible through magazines like National Geographic. I believe it had been my Great Aunt Betsey who kept up the subscription, as she was an avid world traveler and lifetime lover of knowledge.

As a child, I was afraid of her. She had an austere presence critical of rowdy children, but as I got older I grew to enjoy talks with her about travels. In her last year, it was a joy to visit her in the nursing home. We’d walk the halls meeting her friends, attend celebrations in the common areas, and flip through books she had picked up from around the world. Some days I’d take her out to breakfast then run errands with her, all the while talking about different cultures, foods and customs.
Much like getting to know my Great Aunt, traveling to a new place can be intimidating and even scary at times. It can be different and unlike the warmth of home, but I’d like to encourage you to take the time to get to know new places. You’ll find that no matter how foreign they are to your culture and own personal world, there is common ground in humanity.

Tonight is the beginning of the Lunar New Year, and many are celebrating this around the world. Even though I don’t celebrate this personally, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to “travel” to another culture and learn more about their customs and traditions. You’ll notice that red is featured in each of the outfits, as it is customarily seen as the color of happiness, prosperity, and good luck. If you celebrate the Lunar New Year, I’d love to learn more about it!

While at the dog park this afternoon, a lady came in with her dog and grandchild. After introductions, I learned that Susan works as an oncology nurse in the city but spends free time with her grandson, Remington. We started talking about her job, and where I expected to hear about hardships and sorrow…she offered joy. She is surrounded by people confronted with the reality of death, and yet she said she finds more living there than just about anywhere else she goes. Her sentiments reminded me of this quote by Marcus Aurelius: “It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, the talk of love has been coming up for frequently. In one way it’s odd to think that there is a day in which we are expected to show love, when I believe that is how we are meant to live daily. Though the romantic in me loves that a day has been set aside, in honor of love. Outside of loving others well, what is one character trait you seek to live out in your daily life?

I put together a few outfits for the big day and no matter if you celebrate it alone or with someone- I hope you know you are loved. Just as you are. The outfits are fun and can give us a boost of confidence, but understanding you’re valuable exactly as you are is the ultimate gift that you can give yourself this year!

After lunch yesterday, I nearly made it to my car when I realized I had forgotten to get a drink to go. It’d be a long ride home, and I didn’t want to have to stop. So I headed back inside and on my way out I saw a woman with the most kind smile. She instantly said hello and asked me how I was. It took me so off guard, but was a pleasant surprise. Ms. Gail had been working at this restaurant for nearly thirty years making their icebox pies on the daily. After talking for a few minutes about the history of the restaurant, we parted ways but I haven’t stopped thinking about the way she quickly offered a smile and wanted to talk. I’ve talked about finding a stranger to say hello to, but yet again the stranger found me. We get snippets of time to share with others, and I hope we can all be like Ms. Gail- kind. gracious. And full of love for life.

A weekend away is taking one of you to Beaufort, South Carolina- a town full of history and plenty to learn. It’s a Southern gem tucked into the coastline between Savannah and Charleston, great for a quiet getaway will loads of charm and hospitality. I love large cities, but always love getting to discover smaller towns. What charming towns are on your lists to visit or go back to?
